Winch Operations

For Pilots

An annual Winch launch check flight with an instructor must be undertaken by all solo pilots using club gliders on the Winch, other than instructors for whom there is a separate regime.

The check must be recorded in your logbook and signed off by the instructor. For private owners who wish to Winch launch their own gliders, it is strongly recommended that you also complete an annual check.

Pilots are welcome to radio the day’s Winch Operator after release with feedback on the launch, particularly at the beginning of the day.

Pilots are also welcome to visit the Winch during operations by arrangement to see launching taking place from the cab.

Every Winch Operator will tell you that winching has better informed him or her as a pilot when being winch launched.

Additionally, all pilots wishing to winch launch at the Club should read the BGA safe winching guidance here.

For Winch Operators

For operations, the Winch Operators’ SOP is available is availalble here.

For duty days, these are currently listed by the Office on:

  • DutyMan for weekend duties. Swaps can be automatically requested by you and accepted (or refused) by another Operator on this system:

  • e-Allocator for weekday & weekend duties. As only the Office has control over the Operators it has listed on this system, please email the Office to confirm any swaps agreed between you and another Operator.

It is helpful if you are available for the 08.30/08.45 briefing and remember to leave your mobile phone number on the Control Tower white board when on duty.

Become a Winch Operator

The Club always needs more Winch Operators. Operators are normally on duty one day a week or a fortnight (choice of day/frequency, where possible) although some volunteer more frequently.

As a Winch Operator, you are not a Duty Pilot, you are in a warm cab in cold weather, and you are able to claim asmall credit to your Flying Account.

So, if you are a solo pilot and interested in learning to operate the Winch, why not consider becoming a Winch Operator – just contact the CFI, a Deputy CFI or the Winch Master.
